What do I love about what we do? I love the challenge. The teamwork. The buzz. The committed staff. The happy customers. These are the things that I love about what we do.

I have been in this business for longer than I care to remember. Language learning and teaching have always been more of a passion to me than a job. I feel strongly that the experience that the young people have with us is one that they will remember for a very long time and what I love about our team is that we all care about what we do.

English is an ever more important language in the world and yes, it is a huge benefit to these young people to come to the UK to learn it. But, I believe that it is also a huge benefit to them to experience a different culture, be away from home and have to cope with all that entails and meet and befriend people their own age from all over the world.

Incoming flights from all over the world. Thousands of international students and group leaders. The management, teaching and sports teams that make us so good. Wonderful centres in fabulous locations. Visiting cities of culture and history. Designing exciting and appealing English language courses. These are all snippets of what makes UKLC so exciting and at times challenging.

But I like the fact that what we do is fun and that no two days are the same. I like the buzz of visiting a summer camp and seeing our staff enjoying themselves, to ensure that every young person who visits us to learn English enjoys themselves.

SALES & OPERATIONS CO-ORDINATOR

Being a part of UKLC for 6 years I know first-hand what a fantastic organisation this is. From starting as a Sports & Activity Instructor in the summer of 2010 to now as a full time member of staff based in the head office. I have witnessed the passion and commitment which is embedded into every centre to ensure they are of the highest standard year after year.

My role is to assist with agent queries and potential international partnerships, ensuring our customers receive the highest quality service.

Our Ethos

Our Ethos

Our ethos is to educate, inspire and enrich the lives of young people from all over the world through English language, sports and British culture.

Our objective is to enable students of all abilities to improve their English in a safe, relaxed, comfortable and friendly environment while enjoying the best experience of life in the UK. Our specialist staff are carefully selected for their qualifications and experience in either language tuition or sports coaching, as well as their enthusiasm and ability to motivate and engage young people. They all receive full training in our policies and procedures to ensure they deliver teaching and activities to the highest standard. The focus of our courses is on communication: broadening students’ active and passive knowledge and skills, and increasing their confidence in using the English language.

Academic

Academic

At UKLC we know how important it is for each individual student to find their own path in language learning. Thanks to our long experience in this business we provide a wide range of methods that are able to engage our students effectively, by stimulating their motivation. We know that different learners equal different approaches.

According to their age and needs, students’ motivation must be triggered differently, and this is why we have designed a tailored programme that will satisfy all students who study with us, from the young learners who want to have fun playing in English, to the most expert users who want to prepare for an exam or to apply for a university here in the UK. This programme is called You Can Learn 4, or as we like to call it UKL4.

UKL4 FUN is the programme dedicated to our young learners, and it is designed especially to trigger motivation in children aged 8-10.

UKL4 CONNECTION is the programme dedicated to our junior learners aged  11-14 and it aims at increasing the students’ motivation to use English in order to connect with other people.

UKL4 ACTION is the programme designed especially for teenagers aged 15-17 who want to use their English and activate what they know.

UKL4 MASTERS is a brand new programme that explores the English language in depth. We know how good some of our students’ English is, and we are ready for it. This programme is designed to stretch the ability of students aged 15-17.

All students are tested on arrival and are placed on the appropriate course for their age and ability in a class size of 15 wherever possible and beneficial to do so. Lessons are taught between elementary and upper-intermediate levels by TEFLI qualified teachers .

From 2016 our courses are available for the following age ranges: 8 – 10, 11 – 14 and 15 – 17*. They can choose from: a specialised young learner programme, an advanced English masters course for older students , a multi activity programme, a modern dance programme, a drama programme, a tennis programme or premier football. Occasionally it is necessary to zig zag morning and afternoon lessons at some of our centres.

On all of our courses we work exclusively with approved agents, with whom we build long-lasting relationships. If you are looking for a study travel agent in your area, or you would like to become one of our agents, please contact us.

* All students enrolled who are aged 8 to 10 years will follow the Young Learners course for all lessons and activities. Students aged between 11 and 17 who are enrolled on Multi Activity or English Plus courses will be divided by age for activities where numbers allow and it is beneficial to do so. Students aged between 15 and 17 can in some centres choose whether to enroll on the Multi Activity or English Plus course or follow age specific intensive English course.

Welfare

Welfare

Safeguarding children is fundamental to the way UKLC views and ensures the well-being of its students. Here are some of the steps we take to ensure the welfare of students with us;

  • Our “Operations and Safeguarding Handbook” is distributed to all staff. It is available to agents in the Agent Login Area on the website
  • All staff undergo appropriate background and safeguarding checks
  • A dedicated Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator at every site
  • All students are given an induction lesson highlighting the rules for that centre
  • All group leaders are given an induction talk when they arrive which detail their responsibilities towards their group but also as an adult at a residential centre
  • We work with group leaders to ensure their students have a safe and enjoyable stay, taking full responsibility for students when they are in lessons and on scheduled activities.
  • We assist group leaders to ensure students’ safety and care outside of scheduled activities and during excursions
  • UKLC staff are available 24 hours a day for any issue that may arise
  • There is an 24  hour emergency number (0044 1244 567695)  for partner agents, parents and students
  • All students get a UKLC wristband and lanyard to be worn at all times

For more detailed information about each of our policies and procedures with regards to safeguarding, please go to the Agent Login Area and download our handbooks.

Teaching

Teaching

If you are a qualified English language teacher and are looking for summer work then ask yourself this, what makes a good summer school experience?

We believe the answer is working in a relaxed and friendly environment where you are supported not only by academic management but by the other members of the team.

We believe the answer is finding yourself in a place where everything has been well thought out and organised, including what you are going to teach in your lessons.

We believe the answer is to have a bank of great resources full of interesting and engaging task based learning lessons that you will have access to and training in.

We believe the answer is creating the kind of environment where teachers feel it is more than a stop gap summer job, rather a chance to develop and progress, make new teaching contacts and gather experience and ideas to take on with you in your teaching career and hopefully back to us in the future.

If you like our answers, then why not get in touch?

Sports

Sports

As Sports and Activity Instructors your role is to help organise and deliver the social side of the students’ stay. Social activities offer the students a balance to the academic programme, an opportunity to explore the new environment and enjoy different experiences, and a chance to mix with fellow students.  The social programme is divided into three parts, sports afternoons, evening activities and excursions.

In your role you are expected to provide safe, fun and developmental sessions, that ultimately engage and entertain the students.  If you feel that you have the necessary skills and qualifications  please register your interest in working with us.

Management

Management

Summer school management is in a world of it’s own. In what other temporary job would you get such an exhilarating mix of cultures, people and situations. To say it is hectic, is an understatement! But to certain high achieving, well organised, people skilled individuals with killer senses of humour, it is a lot of fun (and somewhat addictive).

If you feel you have the necessary experience, skills and qualifications to be a Centre Manager, a Course Director or an Excursions & Activities Manager then we would love to hear from you.

Isabelle Ashcroft, Sports & Activity Instructor

Isabelle Ashcroft, Sports & Activity Instructor

I arrived at York and received a very warm welcome from all of the UKLC
team, which I very quickly felt part of too. I was very aware of my role and
responsibilities as a Sports & Activity Instructor well in advance before the children arrived, this was because of the training days and support
from all members of staff. Our centre manager was very organised in ensuring that everyone knew what they were doing and felt confident to do so.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at York, it has really secured my decision in
wanting to be a coach in the future.

Anthony Clarke, English Teacher

Anthony Clarke, English Teacher

I first contacted UKLC shortly after finishing my CELTA in early 2014. They were looking for new teachers to go on a month-long 'Leonardo' work experience placement in Spain. I thought it was too good to miss! In no time at all I was on a week-long residential training course in Cheshire and soon after that in Spain itself, in Elche (Alicante), where I had a wonderful four weeks teaching full time in a language academy. I pretty much worked out there and then that was where my future lay. I made some great friends too!
On returning to the UK I worked for UKLC for four weeks in their York summer school, which was great fun. This summer I worked in York again and also in Southampton.
UKLC very much treat you as part of their 'family'. I would strongly recommend UKLC.

Rachel Jeffries, Course Director

Rachel Jeffries, Course Director

I’ve worked for UKLC for a few years now, starting out as a teacher and
taking the role of Course Director in recent years. Working for this company led me to make a move away from secondary public school teaching to the world of EFL permanently. I am currently working in a language school in the south of Italy
and completing my DELTA qualification. So along with a career path and clear
goals I also have to thank UKLC for some unforgettable memories. The past three years have given me some amazing new friends, some who return every year and become like family.

Adam Mathews, Centre Manager

Adam Mathews, Centre Manager

I clearly remember my first day as a Centre Manager. I was loaded up with paper after paper by the college, keys, keys and more keys, and I had so many new places to familiarise myself with. What got me through those days was knowing that, at any moment, I could speak to Celine or Nathan and they would always be there to listen or advise. Although centre managing requires a huge amount of independence, I have never once felt I was on my own.

Bryan Yule, Course Director

Bryan Yule, Course Director

The thing that initially drew me to UKLC’s summer school was its promise to be ‘a friendlier kind of summer school’. I confess I was initially skeptical, thinking that this claim might be mere marketing platitude, but all my years working with UKLC have borne this claim out. It really is an extremely friendly environment to work in, with mutual respect running from the top of the organization and encompassing everyone involved, UKLC staff, students at the schools, group leaders and the staff at the centres.

Aaron Fearnley, English Teacher

Aaron Fearnley, English Teacher

Working for UKLC has always been a pleasure. It feels almost wrong to call it work, considering that you get paid to have fun and spend time with genuinely good people. No matter which role you take at the company, there is a spirited sense of togetherness. I started working for the company as an Activity Leader at a summer school. Later, I took advantage of the fantastic opportunity brought about by the Leonardo Project, which allowed me to gain work experience as a teacher in Spain. This gave me the confidence and expertise to work for UKLC as a teacher at two different schools in England. All of these experiences have exceeded expectations whilst making me realise that hard work needn't feel like hard work.
