GROUP CEO

I have been in this business for longer than I care to remember. Language learning and teaching have always been more of a passion to me than a job. I feel strongly that the experience that the young people have with us is one that they will remember for a very long time and what I love about our team is that we all care about what we do.

English is an ever more important language in the world and yes, it is a huge benefit to these young people to come to the UK to learn it. However, I believe that it is also a huge benefit to them to experience a different culture, be away from home and have to cope with all that it entails and meet and befriend people their own age from all over the world.

Why choose UKLC?

UKLC is an independent, owner-led company which is built on strong, long-running and trusted relationships.  With over twenty years of experience in the ELT sector and working exclusively with Educational Tour Operators, we are a well-known junior course provider who is experienced in creating and delivering specialist, short-term junior programmes.  In 2019, we became an EL Gazette Centre of Excellence.

We have held British Council Accreditation since 2006 and are members of English UK, ALTO and Quality English.

Our aim is to educate, inspire and enrich the lives of everybody we work with.  We strive to be brilliant to work with and have a dedicated Head Office team who make this their goal.  Given that many of our core team began their careers as teachers or sports coaches at our summer centres, we have a wealth of invaluable on-site knowledge and experience to make sure our programmes are delivered to the highest standards.

Academic

Academic

We know how important it is for each individual student to find their own path in language learning. We use a wide range of methods to engage and stimulate our students. This is why we have created a curriculum based on the students’ age, level and needs, structured into three different programmes:

  • FUN (Ages 8-11): Engaging lessons that offer a wide range of materials and activities specific for our young learners. It makes games into lessons and lessons into games;
  • CONNECTION (Ages 11-14): Dynamic lessons that include a variety of topics and media, especially designed to reflect the quick-paced interactive world our younger students are growing up in. Available in levels A1-C1;
  • ACTION (Ages 14-17): Lessons specifically designed to engage our older students through more suitable tasks, topics and contemporary issues.
    Available in levels A1-C1.

CONNECTION & ACTION programmes consist of three different lessons a day

  1. TBL (Task-Based Learning)
During these lessons students are encouraged to complete a task. New language is acquired and skills developed through the task as the students speak and work together.
  2. S&S (Skills & Systems)
These lessons aim to empower our students’ linguistic awareness and capabilities by working on all language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and systems (grammar, phonology, lexis, discourse), as well as using materials relevant to exam preparation (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, TOEFL, IELTS, GESE).
  3. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)
These lessons merge CLIL and British Culture. Students learn about art, literature, and science, or about the history and the geography of the UK, while activating their linguistic knowledge.

Placement Tests
We offer classes at all levels from Elementary to Advanced. Students take a placement test on their first day of lessons to ensure they are placed at the correct level*. We also offer a specific test for students with special needs.

Examinations
We offer the option of taking the Trinity College London Graded Examination in Spoken English (GESE) on site for courses of 10 days or longer.**

Year-round Programmes

We can offer alternative, bespoke English language lessons for our ministay groups. We can deliver a range of English for Specific Purposes courses on request so please contact the team to discuss your group’s requirements.

Students are taught in class sizes up to 16.

* *Due to the variability of students’ test results, a single class may occasionally
include students of slightly different levels.
**Minimum of 10 students across all groups required to source an examiner.
Welfare

Welfare

As specialists in programmes for young people aged 8-17, the safeguarding of children is fundamental to the way UKLC views and ensures the well-being of its students. We have developed robust systems and processes for managing the welfare of the children in our centres.

STEPS WE TAKE TO ENSURE THE WELFARE OF STUDENTS:

  • All UKLC team members undergo appropriate background and safeguarding checks.
  • A dedicated Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator is appointed to every site during the summer. For year-round groups, our Ministay Coordinators manage safeguarding and welfare support.
  • All students are given an induction lesson highlighting the rules for their centre and all Group Leaders attend an induction meeting wherein they receive safeguarding training when they arrive. This training details their responsibilities and ours.
  • We work with Group Leaders to ensure their students have a safe and enjoyable stay, taking full responsibility for students when they are in lessons and on scheduled activities. We assist Group Leaders in ensuring students’ safety and care outside of scheduled activities and during excursions.
  • The UKLC team is available 24 hours a day for any issues that may arise and there is a 24-hour emergency number for partners, parents and students.
  • All students get a UKLC wristband and lanyard to be worn at all times.
  • Individuals are allocated to a UKLC team member who will act as their Group Leader and point of reference at all times (summer only).
  • Our Operations and Safeguarding Handbook (OSH) is distributed to all team members and is available to download on the website. Policies and procedures for welfare and safeguarding are available on our website and in our downloadable handbooks.

STUDENT RESILIENCE AND WELLBEING:

Whilst the physical welfare and safety of our students has always been important, we believe that now, more so than ever, we need to focus on their emotional wellbeing.

In recent years there has been a greater awareness of mental health in young people. An experience away from home, especially in the current global climate, is an opportunity to strengthen that.

Along with sessions on General Safety and e-Safety, we have introduced a new session for every student.

We dedicate lesson time to “Resilience and Wellbeing”. This lesson helps students to process the ever-changing world around them and their ability to adapt to it. We also offer them ideas and tools to manage their own wellbeing.

Banan, Teacher and Activity Leader

Banan, Teacher and Activity Leader

Reflecting on my enriching journey with UKLC, I eagerly anticipate another summer of growth and opportunity. UKLC provided me with my first official teaching experience, a pivotal step that I am immensely grateful for. I am already in love with teaching and I am committed to enhancing my teaching skills.
The steadfast support from UKLC's management team has been transformative. Each day, I felt a surge in confidence as they empowered me to excel. As a recent university graduate, this experience allowed me to showcase my abilities in a real-world context, making my post-graduation journey profoundly positive.
UKLC will be an invaluable chapter in my professional life. I'm excited to continue this incredible journey, knowing that each day brings fresh chances for growth, learning, and empowerment. Here's to another fantastic summer ahead!

Bethany, Sport and Activity Instructor

Bethany, Sport and Activity Instructor

There is never a dull moment when working for UKLC! Whether you're running activity sessions, going on excursions, or organising evening entertainment, there's always something to get stuck into. Highlights from my summer include singing along to Ed Sheeran's Perfect at karaoke night with a whole hall full of students, getting coffee with my colleagues when on break in London, and chatting with the students during friendship bracelet making sessions. Working for UKLC has strengthened my public speaking, communication, and leadership skills, as well as greatly improving my confidence. It was a summer I'll never forget.

Emily, Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator

Emily, Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator

My journey working for UKLC started at Queen Anne’s school in Reading in summer 2017. I had recently completed a course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language so I was keen to put my new qualification to use. I started off as a Teacher and Activity Leader. With the exception of the COVID-19 years, I have returned to UKLC every summer since.
In 2022, I was the Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator at Queen Mary University, London - a job which I felt gave me so much confidence and experience. I have worked with and met some of the most incredible, unique and kindest people through UKLC (many of whom have become close friends of mine).
Returning each summer is amazing as I get to develop in different roles, visit new centres and meet a huge variety of people (and learn a lot about myself too!).
Outside of UKLC, I work as a Residential Houseparent in a boarding school in Chester and have worked in similar roles, as well as an EAL Teacher, in other parts of the U.K.

Nelson, Centre Manager

Nelson, Centre Manager

It was my first experience as a Centre Manager and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling slightly overwhelmed at first. However, the around the clock support from Head Office was brilliant. Also working alongside like-minded people who cared and had a shared vision was a pleasure. The most rewarding part was seeing our students graduate, leaving happy with positive memories!

Shannon, Excursion and Activity Coordinator

Shannon, Excursion and Activity Coordinator

What do I love about UKLC? Everything! Since 2019, UKLC has majorly contributed to my growing confidence, resilience and my passion for inspiring children. If there's one language company that beautifully blends education, diversity and fun together, it's UKLC. So there's no need to ask me: "What are you doing next summer?" because I think you know my answer!

Amelia, Excursion and Activity Manager

Amelia, Excursion and Activity Manager

If I could describe my time working for UKLC in one word, it would be rewarding. I mean this in many ways and not just one. This year was incredibly challenging and when I doubted myself, the team were there to pick me up and remind me I was doing a good job. I am grateful for this as it made me realise I can push myself past whatever limits I thought I had.
One of the best feelings is when, after a tough day, a student will come back from an excursion and say they had an amazing time or they had a conversation with a store owner in English and they are so proud of themselves. It makes the tough times worth it. I just had one thing to remember -I was making a difference to the students and that’s a pretty amazing thing in itself.

Jennie, Sport and Activity Instructor

Jennie, Sport and Activity Instructor

I had the best time working for UKLC this summer. I got to explore a new city, meet so many lovely people and expand my mind. Working at UKLC taught me so many skills, such as leadership, adaptability, communication and organisation. I loved running the evening activities and seeing children from different countries work with each other and make friends despite the language barriers. The experience was very rewarding and improved my confidence, patience and teaching skills.

Adriana, Course Director

Adriana, Course Director

I had the pleasure of working at UKLC this past summer, and it was an incredible experience. From the moment I joined the team, I felt like I was part of a tight-knit and supportive community that shared a common goal: providing an exceptional summer program for our students.
The teamwork and camaraderie among the staff were exceptional. We collaborated seamlessly to ensure that the summer school ran smoothly. The support and guidance from my colleagues and management team were invaluable, and I was constantly learning and growing in my role.
If you're looking for a rewarding and supportive work environment where you can make a real difference in students' lives, gain valuable experience, and meet extraordinary people, this is the place to be. Thank you to the entire team for an unforgettable summer and a truly enriching work experience.

Jack, Teacher and Activity Leader

This summer was my first working with UKLC and I've taken a fair few memories away with me. One of the most rewarding things about the job was teaching students from all over the world. It was a joy to spend time with people from countries and cultures that I normally would never get the opportunity to. It made me realise how different, but totally similar we all are! Also, seeing the students' smiling faces as we waved them off made all the long hours worthwhile; knowing they will remember their summer for the rest of their lives, and that you played a massive part in that, is a hugely enrichening feeling. Lastly, I was lucky enough to meet a handful of UKLC staff that I can see myself keeping in touch with for the rest of my life. For that, I'm super grateful.

This year was my first time working with UKLC and I'm so glad that I did! The UKLC team are so friendly, welcoming, and helpful. I've learnt so much about safeguarding and how to actively promote the welfare or children and the summer was lots of fun. I look forward to next year!

This was my first year working at UKLC as a Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator and the experience was unique, enjoyable and rewarding. The support throughout the summer is incredible and you really feel like you are part of a team from day one! There is always someone who is willing to provide a helping hand both within the centre management teams and head office. The training that I received prior to the summer was incredibly valuable and allowed me to feel comfortable starting a new role. Working at UKLC provided memories that I will cherish and I am already looking forward to next summer!

I had the privilege of being part of UKLC summer 2023 and from the very beginning, this job provided me with valuable insights and experiences that I will carry with me throughout my career. It allowed me to grow both personally and professionally and I am extremely thankful for that.
One of the aspects that stood out to me during my time was this sense of unity and teamwork that made the summer more fulfilling. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the 2023 summer team and I would like to express my appreciation to everyone for their guidance and support. I am excited to carry the lessons I've learned here with me into the future. I wholeheartedly recommend this job to anyone seeking valuable experience and personal growth.
